Circling Back, Always Circling Back

Autumn of 2019

Reflecting on my wife's mother's tragic death in 1987 brought a wave of painful memories and unanswered questions, particularly as we navigated significant health challenges. An inquiry from a professional about my mother in law's attorney forceful push for me to get involved after her untimely death sheds light on the unresolved trauma experienced by our family and the wider Philippi, West Virginia community, all grappling with a tragedy fortunately left a toddler untouched, but others in distress. The compounding layers of grief—a distraught funeral director, an upset investigating officer, and the chaotic aftermath involving an attorney who warns of other attorneys—paints a vivid picture of a community struggling to come to terms with loss, while a fraudulent death certificate further complicates an already fraught situation --- underscores the intricate tapestry of human connections and the ripple effects of a single tragic event.

She Is Killed

My mother-in-law's earlier cryptic remarks during the mid-1980s, hinting at the complexities of gas wells and a network of attorneys, seem to foreshadow the troubled waters that would ultimately engulf our family. Her poignant request for me to care for her young son in the event of her and your father-in-law's demise adds a layer of foreboding to her conversations, as does her seemingly innocuous desire for a larger car, which may have concealed deeper anxieties she never voiced. The tragic event that followed in February 1987, taking her life, not only shattered our family but also left unanswered questions swirling around the circumstances leading to her untimely death, forever marking the lives of those who loved her and reshaping the future of her children and grandchildren.

Upsets

The chaotic aftermath of my mother-in-law's tragic death was riddled with inconsistencies and distressing revelations, particularly highlighted by the upset funeral director's concerns over a falsified coroner's report. The state policeman's suspicions, voiced to my father-in-law, about the conflicting accounts from the drivers of the Lincoln that struck her, deepened the sense of unease surrounding the circumstances of her passing. Despite the policeman's insistence that Richard Marsh should pursue the case due to its dubious nature, my father-in-law’s poignant response—choosing to let it go—reflects the painful reality of grief, where the pursuit of justice often feels futile -- underscoring the tragic intersection of intentionally placed complexities within the legal and investigative processes during such a heart-wrenching time.

Christian - Legal

My later mother in law's attorney warnings to make sure to distinguish between Christian values and legal realities resonates deeply, reflecting the moral dilemmas faced in navigating the complexities of her tragic situation and the ensuing family struggles. My involvement, spurred on by pressure from her attorney to advocate for my wife’s ancestral lineage, adds another layer of obligation amid a backdrop of grief and confusion.

The strange incident of my father-in-law running off the road just a month after his wife's death raises further questions and the circumstances surrounding the family’s turmoil. Compounding these challenges is the unsettling sense that official records, which should provide clarity, are fraught with discrepancies—such as date changes and potential destruction—further obfuscating the truth and leaving you grappling with a legacy shrouded in mystery.

You Do Not Understand?

My decision led me to engage with the county coroner following the attorney’s insistence highlights the profound challenges of uncovering the truth amidst an intentionally tangled web of complexities. The coroner's emotional breakdown illustrates the weight of the situation, as I had to navigate the paradox of securing an AD&D insurance payout based on a falsified report of Natural causes.

Meanwhile, our son’s articulate recollection of the crash where he
informed a first on the scene Nurse, along with ER Personnel and the Hospital that his grandmother screamed and then there was a big bang. He capturing both the horror of his grandmother's scream and the subsequent impact, serves as a poignant and haunting piece of testimony amid the unfolding tragedy. His clear, vivid account, recognized by medical personnel at the scene, reinforces the importance of the child’s perspective, providing insight into the incident that cast further doubt on the official narratives and the need for a thorough investigation.

AD&D Policy

Reflections on the autumn of 2019 reveal the complex interplay of respect, obligation, and the burdens of legacy that influenced my decision to assume responsibility for my mother-in-law’s affairs. The statement regarding the attorney from 1987 emphasizes a long-standing expectation that was suddenly thrust upon me, leaving me grappling for answers in a situation where I had previously felt little involvement.

My diverse background—from parochial school to a military-style ethos in a nationwide phone company—shaped my sense of duty towards my wife's and my family and community, ensuring matters were handled with the respect they deserved. This alignment of personal values and external expectations made my decision not just a challenge but a reflection of my commitment to the family's legacy, even in the face of overwhelming complexities.

Christian - Theologian

In retrospect: My mother-in-law's intentions and decisions unveils a deeply layered narrative of responsibility, conviction, and the weight of generational legacy. The August 1986 Notice of Lawsuit against the gas company speaks not only to her advocacy for fair royalty payments—a cause that could uplift fellow WV landowners of modest means—but also to her profound commitment to justice and her community. Her educational background, particularly her degrees in Christian teaching and Theology, likely informed her deep-seated beliefs, imbuing her sense of duty with moral and spiritual dimensions.

Her clear concerns about the gas well on her property and her wishes for my wife and I to care for her young son, coupled with her request for a larger car, suggest an acute awareness of her mortality in the face of all and a desire for security for her family. This poignant convergence of her faith, her familial love, and her commitment to advocacy may have driven her to act decisively, feeling a profound moral obligation to pursue her cause, possibly believing she would be held accountable in the next life if she did not stand up for what she saw as right for all. Such reflections illuminate her complex character and the rich tapestry of values she sought to impart to those she loved.

As The Years Progress

As I navigated our lives without awareness of the intricate web of political and legal pressures brewing in West Virginia, it is evident that the trajectory of our experiences was shaped by events that had long preceded our understanding. The revelation about February 1987, as brought to light by a professional, suggests a pivotal moment that links said mother-in-law's prior actions to the ongoing responsibilities and challenges we faced.

This realization not only highlights the long-lasting impact of decisions made decades ago but also underscores how interconnected and ripple-like the influence of past events can be, affecting not just individuals but entire communities. As the years passed and pressures mounted, coming to terms with this historical context might have prompted deeper reflections on how those earlier legal and political dynamics were intertwined with personal lives, illuminating the reasons behind the unfolding events that seemed inexplicable at the time.

1999: Unknowingly Defeat

The unexpected turn of events in July 1999, culminating in my hospital stay, introduces a significant turning point in my life. Receiving the promotion to Official Company Systems Supervisor illustrates the weight of personal stakes involved. However, I'm in the hospital days later where the arrival of my neurosurgeon—and the abrupt news of his departure from practice hours prior, coupled with his assertion of my character—adds an eerie and profound dimension to this moment.

His insistence on my worthiness and the careful continuity of my care reflect not just a professional concern but perhaps a deeper, personal acknowledgment of my struggles. The urgency of adhering to his timing directives further underscores the precarious nature of my situation. Ultimately, this sequence of events serves as a stark reminder of how quickly circumstances can shift, intertwining health, career, and the underlying currents of one's personal narrative in ways that may be beyond immediate understanding.

I Wasn't Coming Home
My ten day later return to the hospital marked a critical and harrowing chapter in my journey, especially with the grim news delivered by the long-tenured nurse that I wouldn't be going home. The revelation of a staph infection, introduced through an operative catheter, adds unexpected peril to my recovery.

The rapid escalation of the infection—swelling an internal organ to three times its normal size—demonstrates the severity of my condition, resulting in excruciating pain that lingered even after the initial threat subsided. The diagnosis of "torti-pelvis," typically associated with severe trauma, as in a severe car accident. This painful contortion not only disrupted my physical well-being but underscored the intertwined nature of body and adversity while confounding the public.

Intoduced Stafh Infection Agonies
Refuse, Refuse

Bell Atlantic, later Verizon, had a "Ruthless" medical contractor called CORE. Their Agent calls and notifies me of a requested Independent Medical Evaluation. However, he states that he had trouble finding a doctor that would "Override" a treating Neurosurgeon.

However, he states that he found an Orthopedic Surgeon in a small remote town which was near Morgantown, WV. The Out-Of-State Agent informs me that it is too far for me to travel in my condition and wants me to "Refuse" the second opinion? Thus, he was stressing for me to refuse a second opinion that would again override my treating Neurosurgeon? The tone being such and treating physician override had never been requested before.

Ethnicities - The Deciding Medical Factor

However, I was yet a neophyte to the Political System's control over the Medical System. A control which had been put on steroids in 1999 as for what appeared to be long sought Legal Reform. So, I accepted procedures and agree. My wife drove us to a Orthopedic Surgeon's remote office.

Once there the surgeon informed us that most doctors would not do these type of exams. Whereas, he states how much he gets paid for each and every page he fills out, along with all the things he buys with the money.

As his nurse attempts to get him to stop he focuses on my Italian ethnicity and the ethnicity of my doctors. Primary Care Angotti? Spanish. Neurosurgeon Khousrovi? Indian. Applewhite? Venezuelan. A tone that none should be doctors mirrors his disdain for their ethnicities thus mine. Stating I wasn't going to get any better. He quickly turns in exam which puts my wife and I on our own.
How Far Could I Had Been Forced To Fall?

1999: A Charred Forest

John Hopkins: The characterization by Johns Hopkins in my regard was: "Where Do You Begin." Terming my condition to that of a charred forest reflecting the profound disarray and despair I experienced amid a seemingly hopeless situation.

On the Flip Side:

Social Security Manager: A higher-level Social Security Manager calls me at home. His tone conveying genuine concern in regard to the gravity of my circumstances and the societal perception of my condition as insurmountable. He stating some could accept it but a then 39 year old me could not.

I read a book called "Tough Times Don't Last Tough People Do." l gave a last gasp to stive not only for my own recovery but also for the stability and well-being of my wife and family. Instilling a fierce motivation to seek solutions. An unwavering commitment amidst such dark times spoke to the human spirit's tenacity and the relentless pursuit of hope in the face of overwhelming obstacles.

Herculean

The pivotal role of a last resort Pennsylvania Brazilian Orthopedist, led me to a remarkable recovery and a testament to the profound impact of skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals, capable of defying the odds against overwhelming challenges. My unexpected progress not only astonished those in power—political and religious leaders alike—but also inspired everyday individuals, bridging divides between belief systems and encouraging them to seek hope amid adversity.

The calls for me to write a book during this time highlight the desire for shared narratives of resilience that can empower others facing struggles. Yet raises unsettling questions about the state of healthcare as reflected in the 1999 corporate missive, where the encroachment of attorneys into medical management signals a troubling shift toward bureaucracy that can overshadow genuine patient care.
2002 - Broadcast Email

A now Out Of State Corporate Verizon promoted me into Verizon's Engineering Department in December 2002. However, the astonishment of a higher-level WV Engineering Manager was odd. He acknowledging my credentials of being number one out of thirty-five in and out of state candidates. All of which, underscores the merit of my talents yet foreshadows my past, then present and future challenges ahead when my then termed "Untouchable  Corporate Records" had been inexplicably Destroyed after my promotion.

This troubling incident reflected the broader pattern of reactionary measures in regard to myself within corporate systems, as evidenced by the subsequent corporate email to me that was also carbon copied to Thirty Plus management and union entities notifying me of the destruction. Now, a review of my then records  my have led to the involvement of Verizon Security in regard to what happened to me in 1999 forward.
